Electrostatics or Static Electricity or Frictional Electricity

All of us have the experience of seeing a spark or hearing a crackle when we take off our synthetic clothes or sweater, particularly in dry weather. The reason for these experiences is discharge of electric charges through our body.

Static means anything that does not move or change with time.

The branch of physics, which deals with study of charges at rest  (static charge), the force between the static charges fields and potentials due to these charges is called as Electrostatics or Static Electricity.

Frictional Electricity is the electricity produced by rubbing two suitable bodies and transfer of electrons from one body to other.

Historically, this phenonmenon was discovered by a greek ' Thales of Miletus' around 600BC. The name electricity was taken from the Greek word 'Elecktron'.

  1. When a glass rod is rubbed with silk, glass rod aquring the property of attracting light objects like feathering birds, small bit of paper, etc. The electricity developed on bodies, when thwy are rubbed with each other is called frictional electricity. It is also called Static electricity,as the charges so developed cannot flow from one point to some another point.

    1. If charge is not flowing it means there is no electricity then how the body acquire the property of attracting light particles

  2. The modern concept of electrification is based on the fact that under normal conditions matter contains an eqal number of positive and negative charge. When two bodies rubbed together some amount of charges transfer from one body to another and this results is changing the electrical naturality of both bodies. This is because of charge transfer takes place. The body, which losses the electrons, becomes positively charged while the body, which receivs the electrons, becoms nagativly charged.

  7. The substances which acquire charges on rubbing are said to be 'electrified' or charged. These terms are derived from the Greek word elektron, meaning amber. The electricity produced by friction is called frictional electricity

  8. Two spheres of equal mass A and B are given q and -q charge then mass of B increases. What is the reason?

    Replies
    1. The reason is that B contains more electron negative sign shows that then mass of B will increase.

  9. A soap bubble is given a negative charge, then its radius increases. Why?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Because it has more electron in outer shell and increase of electron increases size due to negative charge. Then radius increases .
